On December 26 a massive earthquake off the coast of Sumatra, Indonesia, triggered a series of deadly waves that traveled around the Indian Ocean, wreaking havoc in nine Asian countries, and causing fatalities as far away as Somalia and Tanzania. The quake was so strong that it altered the tilt of the planet by 2,5 centimeters. Nearly 300,000 people died or were reported missing, and millions were left destitute in the worst natural disaster in living memory.
